Valentines Day.

Valentines Day. A day to show how much your loved one means to you & a day for single woman (and men) to have cupids arrow shoved down their throats. A bitter reminder that they don't have that special someone in their life. There is no escaping it.  Every shop. Bar and restaurant looks like Cupid threw up on it. Valentines cards. Cuddly toys. Hearts & plastic roses. Plastic roses? I mean really? Is it too much to ask for a man to put his hand in his pocket & buy a real Rose or even better, a bouquet of roses? Apparently it is.

Is Valentines Day overhyped though and most importantly is it worth the hype? Just like Christmas and Easter, it's just another opportunity for bullying retailers to convince us to part with our hard earned cash. In my opinion, it takes away the true meaning & magic.  Do we really need one day a year to prove & show our love for someone? Surely we should be doing that every day?

February 14th 2013 is my first single Valentines Day. After my disastrous last relationship & recent run of bad luck in the world of dating, it wouldn't be any surprise if I was found rocking in the corner & shouting a torrent of abuse about how god awful men are. However, I'm not unromantic or really that unhappy and bitter about my current relationship status…Honest. I just don’t believe that love should be defined by one day of the year.

Am I alone in my cynicism or does anyone else believe that Valentines Day is nothing more than commercialised hype?

If you succumbed to marketing and are celebrating Valentines day, I hope you have a wonderful day. I however will be spending some quality time with my two favourite men. Ben and Jerry(s).

  1. I completely agree.. if you really care about someone that much you should show it everyday, and they should know it. It shouldn't take one day of the year to make a grand romantic gesture and prove your love. If I wasn't single.. I would probably still have the same opinion.. If anything your better off single on a day like today purely because we are the ones with that extra money in our pockets, not paying out for an unnecessary box of chocolates or flowers, not paying for an overpriced meal out and stuffed into a cinema to watch some film I would much rather see with my friends.
